The Elements is an original flamenco dance theatre production created by Antonio Vargas. It centres on the five elements of the ancient Chinese philosophy- Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water. Blending Flamenco with Chinese poetry, musical soundscapes and dance aesthetics, the Elements will use the language of Flamenco to symbolise the meeting and encounter between the five elements. The production will explore how they react and counter-react, blend and lead from one cycle of life to the next; each element mirroring the various facets of the human soul, emotions and the cycle of life.
Based on the philosophy of “Tao”, the inter-relationships between the five elements govern the rules of nature as they meld from one changing cycle to the next, eventually forming a full circle, the circle of life. Change is inevitable and the line between harmony and chaos hangs between the balance of these naturally opposing forces.
In this production, you will witness how the universal language of dance is stretched; as we endeavour to present a deeply ingrained Chinese philosophy using the beautiful art of Flamenco.
This original production is artistically directed by Antonio Vargas and is performed by the accomplished dancers from Flamenco Sin Fronteras. Music director Yong Kai Lin creates the musical magic for the production along with sound engineer Louis Tan. The musical cast includes locally based musicians Yong Kai Lin (voice, violin, percussion) Tan Qinglun (bamboo flute), Indra Chen (guzheng) and Flamenco musicians, guitarist Sergio Muñoz (Spain) and singer Chen Po Yin (Taiwan).
